Bageshree is a graceful raga performed in the evening. The name "Bageshree" is another name for the goddess Saraswati, goddess of music and knowledge. Behind the CD tray is a image of Shree Saraswati playing the veena, an ancient stringed instrument. Here, Nancy is rendering raag Bageshree in traditional dhrupad style, as learned from her guru Ustad Z.M. Dagar. It begins with a 20-minute alap, a slow and meditative improvisation in which all aspects of the melody are thoughtfully developed. This alap makes use of pizzicato and harmonics, to add variety to the deep sonorous sound of the cello. A section of the alap is sampled in this mp3 file. This is followed by the jor and jhala sections, which make use of fast rhythms and the high register of the cello. The last two sections are compositions in 12 and 10-beat rhythmic cycles. These are accompanied by the pakhawaj, the traditional drum used in dhrupad music. Here, Shree Manik Munde demonstrates the many strokes on the pakhwaj, and provides a creative interplay with the cello melody and variations. |
